"Mobile Devices" -- A mobile device is a small computing device which is usually small enough to be handheld.  They have a display screen with touch input and/or a miniature keyboard.  They are also referred to as handheld computing device(s) and they have an operating system (OS), and can run various types of application software, known as apps. Most handheld devices are also be equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and Camera/Video capabilities that can allow connections to the Internet and serve as photography devices.  Smartphones and Tablets are popular among those who wish to use some of the powers of a conventional computer in environments where carrying one would be impractical.

We consult on and provide Smartphones and Tablets because they are an important part of business and becoming the standard communications method for many companies.  As with most technology, the way Smartphones and Tablets were originally implemented slowly changed as the advent of remote workers and home offices grew these devices grew in utilization as well.  While extremely useful, there are several issues which plague companies whose employees go mobile.  The first and most serious question is who owns the device and the provider accounts they utilize?  If the employee owns both, then what rights does the employer have in regard to the data / information stored on the device in case of the employee leaving voluntarily or being terminated?  The follow up question to that is what rights does the company have in regard to forcefully removing the data from those devices and what capabilities have been put in place in order to facilitate that action?  Who has the inventory of those devices, how are they identified and how do we know that they are secure and our data safe?  What happens to our data if the device is lost or stolen and again, is our data / information secure?

The questions in regard to these devices could go on forever.  How cost effective are they?  Do you have the best discounts based on the number of phones?  How is your account managed?  How are the devices provisioned when new or replaced?  Do you have service agreements on them?  Is the device secured with end to end encryption and therefore compliant or secure?  Are the devices fully managed remotely?  When is the time to replace it, when does the device become obsolete?  Is the device doing everything it should be doing for both the employee and company?  Is the device backed up or if the device fails, how much data am I going to lose?  Do I have a list of all of the contacts on the phone and do they belong to the company or the employee?  Do my applications support data entry from the devices in the field and how is the information flow being handled and managed?  Can my field personnel use their devices for data input or do they need notebooks or tablets?  What type of device should they carry?  How much time do my employees lose and what does the company lose during a failure or device changeout?

The odds are that most cannot anwer the vast majority of the questions above.  It is a large and onerous task to implement, track, manage and support a mobile device fleet.  Regardless of where the equipment is acquired, the reality of having to take on all of the work that is associated with properly protecting your mobile devices along with the overhead of managing them is daunting to say the least.  The reality of provider discounts may make the acquisition of these devices from them a requirement, but how are they implemented, managed, tracked and supported and what is the cost of these management systems not being in place?
