"Infrastructure As A Service" -- Infrastructure As A Service (IaaS) is a service model that delivers computer infrastructure on an outsourced basis to support business or enterprise operations. Originally, IaaS provided only hardware, storage, servers, data center space and network components; it usually now also includes software which includes user licenses under a modified "Software as a Service" (SaaS) model, security, CCTV and access control solutions along with many other common office technologies. While originally defined as a Cloud based service only, IaaS has metamorphed into a combination of on-site and hybrid services with some services being local to the end users and some resident in the Cloud. This is refered to as a "Hybrid Infrastructure" and is often utilized when heightened security, accredidation or compliance are required.

As with most technology, the way Networks were originally implemented slowly changed and many companies became only cloud based. In hindsight, those companies grew to recognize the loss of a significant amount of security and functionaility which occured with the move to the Cloud. Leasing has been an option for long time, but that does not alleviate several potential issues, including license additions/deletions, cost of equipment and more. Software and License rental is the new option now available and is seeing large numbers of companies moving to that model. The concept of paying monthly for only the number of people you have during that month has become very attractive for business.

While there are restrictions to the monthly rental program, most are beneficial to the business as well. When being in the Public Cloud is applicable to the business, it lowers the cost substantially and reduces equipment cost. When being in the Public Cloud is not applicable to the business due to accredidation requirements, compliance requirements and/or security concerns, then the products can be hosted on either a private cloud or on your local networks. The biggest restrictions to the rental programs are 1). The Software must be installed on equipment managed by and controlled by a certified Microsoft Managed Service Provider and must be hosted on either a Private Cloud or local servers which are provided by a certified Microsoft SPLA provider.
